Does connectivity reduce gender gaps in off-farm employment? Evidence from 12 low- and middle-income countries

Gender gaps in labour force participation developing countries persist despite income growth or structural change. We assess this persistence across economic geographies within countries, focusing on youth employment off-farm wage jobs. combine household survey data from 12 low- and middle-income Asia, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa with geospatial population density, estimate simultaneous probit models of different activity choices the rural-urban gradient. The gender gap increases connectivity rural to peri-urban areas, disappears high-density urban areas. In non-rural child dependency does not constrain young women, secondary education improves their access employment. persists for married women independent improvements, indicating social norm constraints. Marital status are associated positively male participation, negatively female participation; other factors such as show a positive association both sexes. These results indicate entry points policy.
